Here are some examples of the kinds of things that you are paying for with your tax dollars. We hear all about the ballooning deficit and yet items such as these are still being paid for. However, as long as the President does not have a line item veto, it looks like these pork projects will continue.
$335,000 to protect North Dakota's sunflowers from blackbirds
$2.3 million for an animal waste management research lab in Bowling Green, KY
$50,000 to control wild hogs in Missouri
$443,000 to develop salmon-fortified baby food
I know that I'll sleep better tonight knowing that my money is being so wisely spent....
On another note, I read with interest an interview with the killers of Matthew Shepard. They claim they murdered him because they were high on drugs and looking for some cash. "He was pretty well-dressed and had a wallet full of money," Aaron McKinney said of meeting Shepard at a Laramie bar in October 1998. It had nothing to do with his homosexuality. It could have been anyone who looked like they had some cash. This to me is the ultimate argument against hate crimes legislation. It might as well be called thought crimes legislation. Who can ever know the motivation behind any crime? If the crime is murder, the defendant should receive the same penalty regardless of the race, gender, or any other classification of the victim.
